How it’s used: Each working end has two cutting edges and a rounded toe, and the two ends are mirror images of each other.

Why it’s in the kit: A modified Orban knife, about two-thirds the size of a standard Orban.

How it’s used: It comes straight after the blade in Dr. Sy's sequence: blade, then the Orban knife, then the periosteal. Its two pointed blades are mirror images, to reach the tissue between the teeth from either side.

What it gives you: A smaller Orban knife, in keeping with a microsurgical approach.

How it’s used: He retraces his incisions with it. The flat spade end lifts the papillae and the flap; the hockey-stick end elevates the flap further.

What it gives you: Two elevating ends in one instrument: one for the papillae, one for the rest of the flap.

Why it’s in the kit: Dr. Sy's periosteal: a #3 Prichard with a narrower tip than standard.

How it’s used: It follows the Orban knife, to reflect the flap. As the flap gets larger, he moves on to a standard periosteal.

Why it’s in the kit: LaGrange-style soft-tissue scissors, in a large and a small pair. Dr. Sy uses the small pair for soft-tissue trimming.

How it’s used: Super Cut blades: one blade is razor-sharp, the other finely serrated. As the blades close, the serrations hold the tissue so it doesn't slide forward out of the cut, and the sharp blade cuts it where it sits. The blades are Super Cut with tungsten carbide, and the shanks bend twice, in an S.

What it gives you: The same S-shaped blades on two lengths: 155 mm for reach, 115 mm closer to the hand for fine trimming.

Is the cassette included?

Yes — the kit comes packed in the HMCT-1620 sterilization cassette.

Who designed the kit?

Dr. Ira Sy, with HiTeck. Several of the instruments are his own modifications, including the graft packer, the Buser-style elevator, the tunneling instrument and the ring forceps.

Why are most of the tips black?

Dr. Sy chose black working tips so the operatory light doesn't reflect back into your eyes.

How do I clean and sterilize the kit?

Follow our Instructions for Use & Reprocessing; the cleaning steps and steam cycles are listed there.
